Finding the calm within a storm. Finding things to be grateful for in the midst of a crisis.
It is always good to find some good in times when everything seems so dark. According to the Guardian, evidence is showing that the coronavirus is causing a huge drop in carbon emissions: "Actions taken by authorities have inadvertently demonstrated that hefty 25% carbon dioxide cuts can bring less traffic and cleaner air (in China) with only a small reduction in economic growth."
Millions of people are starting to learn new patterns of how to adapt to the current health crisis. Companies have moved to working at home and trips for work have been cancelled.
Dolphins have appeared in the canals in Venice due to the quarantine in Italy. We are beginning to see how nature can mend itself when there is a break in human activity.
We can learn from this crisis and see that changing to a more sustainable lifestyle is easier than people think it is. After all of this blows over, we must remember how we were able to live during this time. It is not a sacrifice but a new way to connect with yourself and loved ones; virtually or in quarantine together.
Furthermore, system change is possible in a short timeframe. Here in Taiwan, the government has recognized the severity of this crisis and has inspired the rest of the world with their swift and decisive action. Bureaucracy and threats to profits were not barriers to action when it was truly needed. As XR Taiwan we need to call on the Taiwanese government to deal with the climate crisis similarly and take drastic action now.
We also must remember to be compassionate during these times. Instead of fear and hatred, respond with compassion and understanding. Like the climate crisis, the coronavirus pandemic will impact every person on the planet, irrespective of race, gender or income. Hopefully this wide-reaching impact can push all of us to be grateful for the ways in which we will be spared, and fight for those who will be most severely impacted: particulary those living in poverty, indigenous groups, and the global south.
Due to the coronavirus, we will be moving to online meetings from now on until this is all over. All actions are cancelled until further notice. We will focus more on training and preparing for actions once all of this blows over. We also recommend that all members try their best to stay at home and minimizing their contact with groups of people. Let's be responsible and help prevent the spread of the virus.
We will be having a call with Aza, who formerly lived in Taiwan and also started an XR Taiwan chapter around the same time I started it. However, our paths never met as he left the country. He will be talking about what it is like to get arrested in Taiwan and will be sharing his experience with XR Switzerland.
Day: 3/21/20 Time: 5-7pm
We are also looking into having a DNA training call on 3/28. This call will be about the core foundations, principles, values, and history of XR. More information soon.
Stay safe and healthy.
